Audiology is concerned with the science of hearing and balance. This includes diagnostic testing and rehabilitation of hearing impaired individuals. The main Audiology Unit is situated at Glan Clwyd Hospital and is part of Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust and provides a service to patients from Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire. The unit has satellites in Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Denbigh, Ruthin, and Holywell. Services provided are comprehensive and include adult rehabilitation, paediatric audiology and cochlear implantation and diagnostic audio vestibular services. In addition there is a large commitment to training future audiologists at basic and advanced level and research programmes that are initiated locally and also as part of National programmes. The Unit has leading-edge equipment and facilities.

The department has taken delivery of £125,000 investment in Vestibular Equipment.
This new equipment includes a state-of-the-art binocular VNG system to examine eye movements, a rotatory chair and air caloric irrigator to examine inner ear function and a ‘Smart Equitest’ computerised dynamic posturography system to measure balance and stability under various conditions.

Audiology is an extremely challenging and expanding field of clinical science. Audiological Scientists are members of multidisciplinary teams who are concerned with the identification, diagnosis and rehabilitation of disorders of hearing and / or balance for patients of all ages, particularly children and the elderly.

Audiological Scientists ensure that reliable and valid test techniques are used, develop and assess new techniques and conduct research relating to diagnostic and rehabilitative services. Audiological Scientists may also have responsibility for managing audiology services within the NHS. Employment prospects are particularly good in this field due to a large number of NHS developments that include the provision of digital hearing aid technology and Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening.
